Faced with the dauting task of rethinking the future of Barcelona’s Zona Franca with no clear brief, we took a radical bet: to design through play. A board game was developed, including gameboard, pieces and rules, to let us explore some of the multiple potential scenarios in which a current industrial and logistics estate could progressively become a vibrant, inclusive and diverse neighborhood. Diametrically opposed to conventional master planning and hard-control urban design, the incorporation of chance and negotiation allows for exploring scenario writing, simulation and process-based design on an urban scale. |
